What's Up

As you know, my big goal this month is to finish three quilts for Island Batik’s Spring Quilt Market booth. The quilts will also be featured in their Spring catalog, and will tour quilt shops as part of an Island Batik trunk show.

Sounds wonderful, but of course there’s a hitch: the quilts must arrive in the Island Batik offices by January 2nd. To make this deadline, I’ve been working day and night (when I’m not in the quilt shop working). I’m happy to report that I’ll get one quilt back from my longarmer today, for binding and labeling, and another sometime later this week.

You’ve seen a sneak of one of the quilts…and here’s the back. Again, I can’t show the fabrics just yet since they are not in release. The backing is lovelier than I can show—it’s all blue and gold and compliments the front nicely.

Here’s a sneak of the other quilt that’s still at the longarmer. I really love the colors in this one too, and so does my darling husband.

Well, that’s all I can show for now. I’m currently working on that third quilt. Wish me luck getting everything done! <grin>

Happy holidays everyone! To celebrate the holidays, I’m having a special link up on Wednesday. There’s a giveaway involved! Be sure to stop by..

After Quilt Market

Always in Stitches, the quilt store where I work, recently held an After Market event to introduce customers to our new offerings and it was fun!

First, refreshments were served and wish lists were passed out. Then one by one, we were introduced to the latest goodies from Fall Quilt Market. Every once in a while, the presentation was paused while another goodie from Market was given away to a delighted crowd.

So what were some of the trends? Cats seemed to be everywhere—in quilts and in fabric, including an awesome collection from Island Batik called Feline Fine.

Wovens (homespuns) are hot again, and they’ve gotten a fresh look with bright colors and gorgeous coordinates.

Deb Strain is back with a new Bee fabric collection.

Apparel fabrics and Cuddle (Minky) were once again pretty popular. You can’t believe how cute the Funky Friends patterns are in Luxe Cuddle fabric!

After the event, customers were given the chance to purchase products fresh from Market before they hit our sales floor.

Island Batik Challenge: Update

As you know, this month’s Island Batik challenge is to make a star quilt. The challenge is called Starstruck.

I’ve been working on the challenge since early in the month. First, I created a design, then I calculated the yardage to see if I could make my quilt. I wanted to use the layer cake of Paisley Dot that I got in my recent shipment from Island Batik, but I wasn’t sure if it would be enough.

It was enough, but just barely. Last week I cut my fabrics and started making the four-patch units. This week I made the flying geese, using the No Waste Method.

As you can see, this is going to be a very scrappy quilt!

Along the way there have been little challenges. Like when I miscut a few squares and had to substitute a bit of yardage from another collection. And when I sewed the second side of the flying geese before pressing the first side, trapping first side down. That resulted in some unsewing, resewing, and pressing again. Ugh. It seems this quilt just doesn’t want to be made!

It will get made however, and before the end of the month. So stay tuned!
