Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop Giveaway Winner!

The Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop is over and it's time to announce my giveaway winner. I hope you enjoyed visiting all of my fellow Island Batik Ambassadors, and seeing the new batik collections. If you missed any of them, it's not too late to view the wonderful quilts and gorgeous batiks--just click the links below.

My collection was Blue Moon, and to celebrate the hop I decided to give away a charm pack to one lucky winner in the U.S.

To one lucky International follower, I'm going to give a free PDF pattern from my shop!

Before I announce the winners, let me tell you quickly about the Island Batik events coming up this month.

First, we'll be celebrating Galentine's Day, a day to celebrate your best gal friends and raise them up! To celebrate, the Island Batik Ambassadors will be making postcards or mug rugs, so watch for that post sometime on or before February 13th, which is Galentine's Day. Galentine's is the invention of Leslie Knope, a character played by Amy Poehler in Parks and Recreation. The day went from fiction to fact when it was embraced by women around the world.

I'm planning to focus my weekly Wait Loss Wednesday linky party on February 14th to sharing everyone's Galentine's Day and Valentine's Day creations (old or newly created), so I hope you'll join us. I hope you'll put your thinking caps on and whip up something if you don't already have something to share!

Also in February, the Island Batik Ambassadors are celebrating Valentine's Day (of course) with a MiniLove creation so please watch for that post.

Okay, it's time to announce the winners of that fabulous charm pack and the free pattern of choice from my shop! First I gathered all the US entrants, assigned a number to each one and let Random.org choose the winner.

And the winner of the charm pack is...

Congratulations Kit! Please email me your postal address and I'll get the charm pack out to you.

And now for the winner of a free pattern! Like before, I gathered all the International entries in a pile, assigned a number to each one and let Random.org do the rest.

And the winner is...

Congratulations Turid! Please send me an email with your pattern choice. You'll find my shop here.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the hop! I have giveaways often so be sure to follow me if you want. You'll find the ways to follow at the top of my sidebar.

Bye for now! Please think about creating something to link up to my Galentine's/Valentine's linkup on Wednesday, February 14th!

Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Hi and welcome to the first day on the Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop!

Today’s featured Island Batik collection is called Blue Moon, and it's simply wonderful!

Blue Moon is part of the Winter collection, and you'll find it in quilt shops beginning this month (January 2018).

fourseasons.jpg

The icy blues and purples in the Blue Moon collection made me think immediately of a snowy forest in winter. I considered many designs for my quilt, finally deciding on this Bear's Paw variation. After putting the top together, I kept thinking of a snowy forest, and the light filtering down from a full moon. I call my quilt Freshly Fallen.

I played with the idea of adding a border, but finally decided it didn't need it.

For quilting, I used a large loop design for the big square in the block, and a simple curved outline for the HSTs. For the corner triangle in the block, I used a backwards question mark design. I quilted each block the same, which made the quilting go pretty fast because I had a firm plan.

I'm coming down with the flu or something, so my husband and daughter kindly took my quilt outside for these photos. I gave them a list of some of the shots I wanted, then told them to play. Didn't they have fun?

Here are the quilt details:

My Last Island Batik Ambassador Challenge of the Year

2017 is coming to a close, and before it does, I wanted to share with you my December Island Batik Challenge.

This month, the challenge was to make a scrappy table runner. I was inspired by the spirit of the season and created "Silent Witness."

Tabletop.jpg

I designed my table runner for my marble top chest, located in my entrance way beneath a large mirror. I think it looks wonderful there!

Although I pulled a variety of batiks from several different collections to make my runner, several came from the new Pumpkin Patch collection.

I edge-stitched the appliques and quilted the trees at the same time. For the sky, I used a swirly, snowy night quilting design.

For the binding, I used a two color binding that matched the quilt top.

Here are the quilt details:

"Silent Witness"
14" x 35"
Fabrics: Various Island Batiks, including the Pumpkin Patch collection
Pattern: Original Design
Batting: Quilter's Dream Request
Piecing Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2605 Grey
Quilting Thread:  Sulky 40 wt #561 (Lipstick) and #1028 (Baby Blue), Gutterman 50 wt #8640 (Dark Spruce), Wonderfil 40 wt #4116 (Palmetto Green), Wonderfil Konfetti100 wt #606 (Peacock Blue), #707 (Pine Green), and #414 (Soft Tan), Robinson-Anton 40 wt (Gold)
Pieced and quilted by Jennifer Fulton

I have really enjoyed my Island Batik challenges this year! They really push me to be creative. In this case, I had to tweak my original idea until I found something that would work with the various batiks I was given. I love that tiny pop of red that the cardinal provides! And when I discovered that I didn't have any brown or white that I could use for the ground, I decided to use blue! I know, the ground isn't blue. But doesn't it look wonderful?

I hope you have a wonderful New Year. I've got one more Island Batik challenge to do (our year runs from February to January). In January, me and my fellow Island Batik Ambassadors are hosting a blog hop to feature all the new Island Batik collections. The hop begins January 8th, right here on my blog.

Island Batik Back to School Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Hi and welcome to my day on the Back to School Blog Hop. Today’s featured Island Batik collection is called Vineyard, and it’s absolutely gorgeous!

When we were given the theme Back to School for the hop I wasn’t sure what I wanted to make. Should my quilt feature ABCs? 123s? Books? Pencils? A thousand ideas ran through my head.

Back to School Blog Hop Graphic.jpg

In the end though I decided to make a quilt for my daughter in college who is a lover of all things purple. The Vineyard collection features lovely purples, blues, and greens so it was perfect for her.

Katerina is a Junior this year and she’s living in an on-campus apartment. Actually, it’s an old house with a two-bedroom apartment upstairs and another one downstairs where Katerina lives. The apartment is run by the college so we see this as a half-step up into a real world apartment experience.

The house has several lovely old fireplace mantels (the fireplaces no longer work), and it’s here that Katerina decided she’d like to hang a mini-quilt.

I call my quilt Basket of Blooms. It’s based on an old pattern called Basket of Tulips, designed by the WPA (Works Progress Administration). As a former President of my Quilt Guild, I was challenged along with the other former Presidents to take one of these old WPA patterns and use it as inspiration to make a new quilt. These quilts will be hung together in a special exhibit at our up-coming quilt show.

The original pattern uses applique, but I wanted to go in a different direction for my quilt so I created a pieced design that was inspired by but not a duplicate of the original pattern. I call my quilt Basket of Blooms because I don't’t think my flowers look like tulips, but rather like peonies. Still, I don’t think peonies come in purple so I’m leaving the flower type up to your imagination and not calling the quilt Basket of Peonies.

I quilted the flowers in a swirly pattern that emphasized the points. For the background, I quilted some leaves and swirls of wind. In the border, I quilted circles.

Here are the quilt details:

"Basket of Blooms"
17" x 17"
Fabrics: Island Batik Vineyard collection
Pattern: Original Design, based on the WPA pattern "Basket of Tulips"
Batting: Quilter's Dream Request
Piecing Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2605 Grey
Quilting Thread:  Madeira 40 wt. Polyneon #1904 Dark Sage, Wonderfil Konfetti #KT1609 Sky Blue, and Mettler #50 wt. #0581 Deep Purple

Please visit Jeanette @ Inchworm Fabrics, who is also featuring the Vineyard collection today.

More Vineyard!

I love purple, so Vineyard was practically designed for me! As a result, I’ve used my Vineyard fabrics in a quite a few projects, including a sales rep sample that included all the colors in the collection.

I just can’t stop working with the wonderful fabric so I made this quick little zippered pouch for Katerina as well.

I designed the pouch to hold a sketch book and pencil (Katerina loves to draw and she even designed the blue kitties I use on my blog.) If you’d like to make a zippered pouch for yourself, they are pretty easy. Here’s my new photo tutorial that shows you how.
