My Island Batik Surprise Fabrics

Every year, the Island Batik Ambassadors receive two box fulls of goodies. In those boxes, there are often “surprise fabrics,” wrapped up all pretty so when we make a box opening video, those fabrics aren’t accidentally shown to the public before they are released.

Last July, I received a box of Island Batiks and inside was a bundle of surprise fabrics—half-yard cuts from each of the fabrics in one of the Fall/Winter 2018 collections. I received the Fortune Teller collection.

The first thing we do with these surprise fabrics is to make a rep sample—a small mini quilt—for the fabric representatives to show at quilt stores. The rep samples help the fabric reps present the various fabric collections. Man, there’s nothing to seeing and touching the beautiful fabrics in an Island Batik collection!

After the collection is sold, the rep samples eventually get donated to the Small Kennel Quilt Team (which is supported by the Petfinder Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports animal shelters/rescue groups. The Small Kennel Quilt Team makes kennel quilts for rescue animals, and the rep samples we make are perfect for lining a kennel and making a poor, rescued animal feel just a little bit better.

Here’s my Zora, trying out my Fortune Teller rep sample.

The next thing we Ambassadors do with the surprise fabrics is to make a quilt. This quilt is featured in a blog hop, and my Fortune Teller quilt was featured in January’s Island Batik Getaway Blog Hop. I didn’t get my quilt finished unfortunately because my sister was in the hospital and later died. I have been working on it though and have been updating you on its progress. Although I don’t have to finish the quilt for Island Batik, I want to finish it for me and my sister.

I’ve made several rep samples as an Island Batik Ambassador. I can’t show you my latest one because it features fabrics in a Spring Summer 2019 collection that hasn’t been released yet. Here are my rep samples for Vineyard (Spring/Summer 2017) and Dear William (Spring/Summer 2018).

My Latest Pattern for Island Batik!

As you know, I’m an Island Batik Ambassador. From time to time, I preview the upcoming batik collections and create new quilt patterns for them. Recently I created a new pattern I call Emerald Lodge for the Elk Lodge Island Batik Fall/Winter 2018 collection.

You can view Emerald Lodge and Belfast Market (another quilt pattern I designed for the Fall/Winter 2018 collection) in the online Fall Winter catalog. The fabric collections for both patterns are in stores now.

Emerald Lodge finishes at 88" x 88". The colors in this collection are so warm and wonderful, just like fall.

I had Emerald Lodge quilted with an all over pattern that included pinecones and pine needles. I just love it!

For the backing, I used Pinecone, an Island Batik Basic. Basics are available all the time so you should be able to easily find it at your local quilt store.

Again, you can click here to view the Fall catalog online. Here are a couple of the pages from it.

To celebrate my new pattern release, take 20% off Emerald Lodge this week (until Saturday, 4/20 at midnight EST). Click here to visit my shop.

If you make Emerald Lodge or any other quilt pattern of mine, I'd love to see it!

I have a weekly linkup that's just perfect for sharing your works in progress and quilt finishes. Drop by any Wednesday to share what you're working on in my Wednesday Wait Loss.

My New Pattern for Island Batik!

As you know, I’m an Island Batik Ambassador. That means I get periodic shipments of the latest batiks to use in a monthly challenge quilt. I also get access to images of upcoming fabric collections so I can create new quilt patterns with them. If I’m lucky, one or more of my patterns are selected for inclusion in the next Island Batik catalog, and sold nationwide to quilt stores. They also appear in the Island Batik Market booth!

Last fall, I created several designs, and two of them were selected for inclusion in the Fall Winter catalog, and displayed at the Houston Quilt Market last October. The fabrics are just now arriving in stores, and I thought I’d share one of my new patterns with you! The pattern is called Belfast Market, and it features the Flea Market fabric collection from Island Batik.

Belfast Market finishes at 92" x 108". I love the colors of these fabrics and had such fun working with them!

For the backing, I used Baja, an Island Batik Basic. Basics are available all the time so you should be able to easily find it at your local quilt store.

We don’t get a lot of time to make our quilts, get them quilted and bound and shipped to Island Batik for photographing for the catalog, so for the quilting I chose an all-over pattern. I really love how it compliments the shimmer that’s created by the glowing center.

You can click here to view the catalog online. Here are a couple of the pages from it. Belfast Market was featured at the beginning of the Fall fabric collections section!

I’m so excited to share that the pattern was chosen as the Opportunity quilt for my guild’s upcoming Quilt Show! Every show, we make a quilt and raffle it off to make money for the guild.and this time, my pattern was chosen. I’m a former President of the Quilter’s Guild of Indianapolis, and the past presidents all got together to make the blocks and to sew the quilt together. Isn’t that cool?

Last year’s President Cathy Franks quilted it and it’s so lovely! Her quilting is impeccable and I’m honored that she quilted my design. So gorgeous!

If you’re interested in Belfast Market, you can purchase it online in my store. The guild is also selling my pattern at it’s show. It’s the first time they’ve offered the pattern for the Opportunity quilt for sale at the show, and I’m honored to have been chosen. If you use the code QGI2019 when purchasing the pattern from my online shop, I’ll donate the same profits to the guild that they would get for selling it themselves.

If you make Belfast Market or any other quilt pattern of mine, I'd love to see it!

I have a weekly linkup that's just perfect for sharing your works in progress and quilt finishes. Drop by any Wednesday to share what you're working on in my Wednesday Wait Loss.
