Late last year, my friend Cheryl @ QuilterChic asked if I'd be interested in participating in her 2018 Designer Spotlight. Each month, Cheryl has been introducing a different designer to her audience, and that designer has presented a free pattern for the month.
I thought and thought and decided to design a small mini-quilt for Halloween. I'm calling it Monster Mash. Isn't he adorable?
Monster Mash finishes at 12" x 12" and is perfect for using up your Halloween scraps!
Because the applique has a lot of pieces, I fused the separate parts first, then used the fused parts to create the monster. Since I did all this fusing on a Teflon pressing sheet, the final monster applique didn't stick to it so it was easy to move the whole thing to the background square and center it in place.
For quilting, I quilted in the ditch around each of the applique shapes. I then quilted a spider's web in the upper-left corner of the background, and a small spider in the lower right-hand corner. In the upper right-hand corner, I quilted a bat. In the outer border, I quilted a simple curvy ribbon with swirls.
I've decided that this little mini-quilt will be perfect in my daughter's college apartment, so for the backing, I used this cute Halloween kitty print (cats are her favorite pets!)
