The month long Island Batik Beat the Heat Blog Hop continues with lots of giveaways, awesome batiks, and beautiful quilts. Be sure to visit all the Ambassadors who are participating!

For Spring Market, I designed several quilts using the fabrics in the Spring collection. Today on the hop the Petal Pushers collection is being featured, and so I’m reintroducing my Broken Road pattern which was designed for Petal Pushers although frankly, it would look good with any two of your favorite colors.

I’m having a sale!

To celebrate the hop, I’m offering 20% off my Broken Road pattern. To read more about Broken Road, click here.

The Petal Pushers collection is in stores now. The sale will continue through the end of the month.

The Island Batik Clockworks collection was featured during Week 1 of the hop, and my Like Clockwork pattern was designed for it, so what the heck let’s put that on sale too through the end of the month. To read more about Like Clockwork, click here.

Don’t miss the giveaway!

My Project - Peppermint Twist Tablerunner

My project is this lovely table runner. I call it Peppermint Twist.

The pattern comes with a variation that includes pieced setting triangles. I love how the pattern completely changes with this simple change!

Peppermint Twist uses a stripe fabric that’s printed on the diagonal. Don’t you just love how that stripe twists in the block and border, just like a sweet candy cane?

I also put that diagonal stripe to good use in the binding. I love using a stripe in a binding! If you can’t find a diagonally printed stripe fabric, you can still make Peppermint Twist and it will look lovely. The blocks just won’t twist as much.

The Peppermint Twist Tablerunner uses partial piecing to complete the block. Don’t let that discourage you! Just for the hop, I’ve prepared a special photo tutorial on how to make the block using partial piecing, just to get you over any fears you might have.

Partial Piecing Tutorial

For my tutorial, I decided to make a mini version of the block used in Peppermint Twist. I figured it’s July, so why not make a red, white and blue block? If you’d like to make one too, here’s what you’ll need.

Red

(1) 1” x 18” strip (I cut these from a fat quarter—be sure to starch your fabrics first!)

Stripe

(1) 1” x 18” strip

Navy

(1) 1-3/4” x 18” strip

Navy Center Square

(1) 2” square

Sew a Strip Set

The first thing you need to do is to create a strip set. It’s best to starch your fabrics before cutting your strips to keep them from stretching out of shape as you sew the strip set.

Sew the Red, Stripe, and Navy strips together, pressing the seams in the same direction. Take your time and try to get an accurate 1/4”. If you have problems doing that, you can always cut your Navy strip at 2” and then trim the strip set when you’re done sewing it together.

The strip set should measure 2-3/4” wide. Trim or resew the strip set as needed.

Subcut the strip set into (4) 2-3/4” x 4-1/4” rectangles (Unit 1s).

If you don’t want to make a strip set but you’d like to try your hand at partial piecing, simply cut (4) 2-3/4” x 4-1/4” rectangles and (1) 2” square to make this block.

Lay Out Your Block

Layout your Unit 1s and the center square. Now let’s sew this block together!

Sew the First Rectangle

Lay the Navy 2” square on top of (1) Unit 1, right sides together (RST), aligning the top and side edges of the Navy square and the Red strip of Unit 1 as shown.

Sew from the top of the Navy square, stopping about 1/2” from the bottom edge of the square. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.

Press towards the Navy square.

Add the Second Rectangle

Rotating the block clockwise, place (1) Unit 1 on top of the block as shown, RST. Stitch the entire seam, and press to the Navy square.

Add the Third Rectangle

Rotate the block clockwise again, place another Unit 1 on top of block RST as shown. Stitch and press towards the Navy square.

Add the Last Rectangle

Rotate the block clockwise one more time and add the last Unit 1. Press to the Navy square.

Finish the Partial Seam

Return to the first Unit 1 and align its edges with the last Unit 1 and the Navy square. Sew the partial seam to complete it, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Square block to 6-1/2”.

Here’a look at my pressing. Press the seams in the strip set in the same direction, and as you’re sewing the block together, press towards the center square.

What Can I Do With My Block?

Tons! Obviously, you could make more blocks and sew them into a cute patriotic mini-quilt. This one is set on-point just like the blocks in Peppermint Twist. Notice how the blocks still twist, even with a straight stripe (non-diagonally printed).

This is what it would look like if you set the blocks horizontally, with sashing.

Don’t want to make a quilt? It would be super easy to sew your block into a mug rug like these. I’ve got a step by step tutorial here.

I’m participating in the Sew Let’s QAL, and I’ve created several projects you can make with the blocks in that quilt along. There’s no reason why you couldn’t use your new patriotic block in one of my sample projects.

Click here to see my QAL Segment 1 projects and my QAL Segment 2 projects. I’ll be creating Segment 3 projects at the end of the quilt along so be sure to follow me (you’ll find ways to follow at the top of my sidebar.) It’s not too late to join us in the quilt along if you like—click here to learn more about the quilt along.

I Love Partial Piecing!

If you’ve found this tutorial easy to do, why not make my Peppermint Twist table runner for your holiday season? It’s only three blocks.

The pieced setting triangles are easy too—they are simply partially pieced blocks that you lop off after you get the quilt center together. So feel free to try both versions!

You’ll find the Peppermint Twist Table Runner pattern in my shop. My pattern is on sale for 20% off through the end of the blog hop.

If you’d rather make a quilt, you’ll find the original Peppermint Twist quilt pattern in my shop along with Water Vortex (the pieced setting triangles version). Both of these patterns are also on sale at 20% off throughout the duration of the blog hop.

If you make my Peppermint Twist Table Runner, Peppermint Twist quilt, Water Vortex, or any other quilt pattern of mine, I'd love to see it!

I have a weekly linkup that's just perfect for sharing your works in progress and quilt finishes. Drop by any Wednesday to share what you're working on in my Wednesday Wait Loss.
