Project Ideas for Sew Let's QAL: Segment 3

Welcome to the project ideas post and the linky parties for the Segment 3 Prize Giveaway and the Grand Prize Giveaways for the Sew Let’s QAL!

By now you've downloaded all 4 block patterns for Segment 3 of our quilt along, and have made or are making all your blocks. Now it's time to think about how to use those blocks!

If you plan on making a quilt, the other quilt along hosts will be providing plenty of setting suggestions in their project post.

Remember, to enter for the Segment 3 prize, you only need to make the four blocks in Segment 3 and upload one single photo that shows all four of them. To enter for the Grand Prize, you’ll need to make projects or a quilt top that uses all the blocks.

I’ve been making several projects along the way instead of a quilt top. At the end of Segment 1, I presented my first project suggestion: Small Wall Hanging. Click here to view the details for that project.

For my wall hanging I used my Binding Clips block in the wall hanging, along with the Sewing Machine block and the Thread Tales block although you could substitute other blocks if you like.

At the end of Segment 2, I presented two project suggestions a Fabric Box and a Vinyl Project Bag. Click here to view the details for making those projects.

I didn’t make all the blocks in this quilt along, but the project suggestion for the two Segment 3 blocks I did make is a zippered sewing pouch. You could use this pouch for anything, like your hand-sewing needles, scissors, thimbles, and thread.

The zippered pouch contains two clear vinyl pockets that zip closed, a Velcro closure, and plenty of room to hold your sewing tools.

Zippered Sewing Pouch

My project suggestions uses two reduced-size versions of our quilt along blocks to make a sewing pouch. If you’d like to make a zippered sewing pouch too, here is what you’ll need.

  • Two 6-1/2” quilt blocks

  • Two zippers, at least 6-1/2” long (it’s okay if they are longer—you’ll trim them to size)

  • Fabric that matches zippers: (2) 2-1/2” x 1-1/2” rectangles

  • Accent fabric inside (teal): (1) 2” x 6-1/2” rectangle, (3) 4” x 6-1/2” rectangles, (1) 6” x 6-1/2” rectangle

  • Accent fabric outside (coral): (2) 2-1/4” x 6-1/2” rectangles, (1) 1” x 6-1/2” rectangle, (1) 1-1/4” x 6-1/2” rectangle

  • Vinyl: (2) 6” x 6-1/2” rectangles

  • Fusible Fleece or Batting: (1) 6-1/2” x 15-1/2” rectangle

  • Lining fabric: (1) 6-1/2” x 15-1/2” rectangle

  • Sew On Velcro: (1) 3/4” x 4-1/2”

Sew the Inside

Prepare zippers

Cut both zippers to 6-1/2” long. Take (1) 2-1/2” x 1-1/2” rectangle (zipper color) and fold the two 1-1/2” sides in towards center and press. Fold the other sides in a little and press. Fold this over the raw end of the zipper and sew to secure it.

Repeat with the second zipper.

Sew first zipper

Fold (1) 2” x 6-1/2” teal rectangle in half and press. Place folded edge along right side of zipper and sew.

Fold (1) 4” x 6-1/2” teal rectangle in half and press, then fold into center again and press. Lay folded edge along left side of zipper and sew.

Add Top Vinyl

Insert (1) 6” x 6-1/2” vinyl rectangle into folded edge of zipper (the left edge) and sew to attach it.

Sew second zipper

Fold (1) 6” x 6-1/2” teal rectangle in half and press then fold again towards center and press. Place folded edge along right side of zipper and sew.

Add to Top Vinyl

Insert (1) 6” x 6-1/2” vinyl rectangle into folded edge of zipper. Position the top of vinyl 1” from the fold. (This positioning leaves a tiny space at which the finished sewing caddy will fold in half.) Sew to attach the vinyl.

Finish Second Zipper

Fold (1) 4” x 6-1/2” teal rectangle in half and press, then fold into center again and press. Lay folded edge along left side of zipper and sew.

Add Bottom Vinyl

Insert (1) 6” x 6-1/2” vinyl rectangle into folded edge (left side) of zipper. Sew to attach it.

Finish the Bottom of Vinyl Unit

Fold (1) 4” x 6-1/2” teal rectangle in half and press, then fold into center again and press. Insert the bottom vinyl into the folded edge and sew.

Add Binding

Fold (1) 2-1/4” x 6-1/2” coral rectangle in half and press. Fold in half again and press. Sew to the front of vinyl , raw edges to raw edges. Fold over the edge and finish like binding. I machine sewed my binding down. Set the Vinyl Unit aside.

Make Outside

Sew (1) 2-1/4” x 6-1/2” coral rectangle to the top of Back Block. Press towards the coral strip.

Sew (1) 1” x 6-1/2” coral rectangle to the bottom of Cover (Front) Block. Press towards the coral rectangle.

Sew the Back Block to the Cover Block as shown (Cover Block will be upside down.)

Sew (1) 1-1/2” x 6-1/2” rectangle to the bottom of this unit to create the Outside.

Fuse (1) 6-1/2” x 15-1/2” rectangle of fusible fleece/fusible batting to the back of the Outside.

Sew Velcro on

Sew the hook side of the Velcro to the top of the Cover Block, centering it.

Assemble Zippered Sewing Caddy

Place the Vinyl Unit on top of (1) 6-1/2” x 15-1/2” lining rectangle, both right sides up. Make sure to align the bottom edges and clip to keep everything in place. Move the zipper pulls to the middle of the zippers, out of the way.

Place the Outside on top, right side down. Be sure to place the Cover Block at the bottom edge. Clip along all the edges and sew, leaving an opening. Backstitch at the beginning and ending of the seam. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Press from the Outside (not the Vinyl side.)

Sew caddy closed

Press under the seam allowance at the opening. Hand stitch or top stitch to close the opening.

Finish the inside pockets by first sewing along the binding at the top of the first pocket.

Next, sew the bottom of the top pocket closed by sewing along the bottom of the Cover block, from the right side.

Fold the pouch closed, mark the position of the loop side of the Velcro and sew it down.

That’s it! You’re done. Fill your zippered sewing caddy with the things you need to keep handy. I use my caddy to hold my hand sewing needles, thimbles, tiny scissors, and seam ripper. Next time I need to sew a quilt binding down or add a hanging sleeve, I’m all set!
