Hi and welcome to my day on the Back to School Blog Hop. Today’s featured Island Batik collection is called Vineyard, and it’s absolutely gorgeous!
When we were given the theme Back to School for the hop I wasn’t sure what I wanted to make. Should my quilt feature ABCs? 123s? Books? Pencils? A thousand ideas ran through my head.
In the end though I decided to make a quilt for my daughter in college who is a lover of all things purple. The Vineyard collection features lovely purples, blues, and greens so it was perfect for her.
Katerina is a Junior this year and she’s living in an on-campus apartment. Actually, it’s an old house with a two-bedroom apartment upstairs and another one downstairs where Katerina lives. The apartment is run by the college so we see this as a half-step up into a real world apartment experience.
The house has several lovely old fireplace mantels (the fireplaces no longer work), and it’s here that Katerina decided she’d like to hang a mini-quilt.
I call my quilt Basket of Blooms. It’s based on an old pattern called Basket of Tulips, designed by the WPA (Works Progress Administration). As a former President of my Quilt Guild, I was challenged along with the other former Presidents to take one of these old WPA patterns and use it as inspiration to make a new quilt. These quilts will be hung together in a special exhibit at our up-coming quilt show.
The original pattern uses applique, but I wanted to go in a different direction for my quilt so I created a pieced design that was inspired by but not a duplicate of the original pattern. I call my quilt Basket of Blooms because I don't’t think my flowers look like tulips, but rather like peonies. Still, I don’t think peonies come in purple so I’m leaving the flower type up to your imagination and not calling the quilt Basket of Peonies.
I quilted the flowers in a swirly pattern that emphasized the points. For the background, I quilted some leaves and swirls of wind. In the border, I quilted circles.
Here are the quilt details:

I love purple, so Vineyard was practically designed for me! As a result, I’ve used my Vineyard fabrics in a quite a few projects, including a sales rep sample that included all the colors in the collection.
I just can’t stop working with the wonderful fabric so I made this quick little zippered pouch for Katerina as well.
I designed the pouch to hold a sketch book and pencil (Katerina loves to draw and she even designed the blue kitties I use on my blog.) If you’d like to make a zippered pouch for yourself, they are pretty easy. Here’s my new photo tutorial that shows you how.
