For my blocks, I’m using the Shiny Objects in Holiday Twinkle collection by flaurie & finch for RJR Fabrics.

Block 9 in our quilt along was designed by Bobbi @ Snowy Days Quilting and it’s called Reindeer Games. Here’s my version.

Block 9 - Reindeer Games

I just love this block! For the background of my block, I chose #3022-06 Seafoam from the Holiday Twinkle collection. I used 2792-12 Snow and a scrap of black for the eyes, 3023-06 for the antlers, and 3164-03 for his glowing red nose. I decided to use 3026-04 Red Velvet for the face rather than brown scraps, so my Rudolph really glows red! <grin>

Tips for making this block

As a QAL host, I’m here to help you achieve success with this block. The pattern is well written and full of wonderful tips, including taking the time to measure and resew the block units as you go along. So my first tip is to be sure to do exactly that! Really. There are a lot of pieces in this block and measuring the smaller block units and making corrections before sewing them together is probably the most important thing you can do for success with this block.

My second tip is to measure your stitch and flip units after pressing, and to trim them to size prior to trimming the seam allowance to 1/4". Do this will ensure that your units are the right size.

My last tip is to cut the Brown and Blue 3 7/8" squares at 4" instead. Then, instead of cutting the squares diagonally and dealing with the bias edges, draw a diagonal line on the back of the blue square and sew 1/4" away from the line on either side. Cut on the line and press. You'll end up with 2 half-square triangles (HSTs). Trim them to 3-1/2" and you're good to go!

If you would like to see an illustrated tutorial on this technique for making HSTs, click here.
