This month our focus as Ambassadors is to make kennel quilts (small quilts that fit inside portable carryalls and provide comfort to traumatized pets, such as those that have survived a disaster). Island Batiks has partnered with the Petfinder Foundation to create the Piece for Shelter Pets initiative, a charity that helps animal shelters and rescue groups protect otherwise adoptable pets from being euthanized. The initiative donates money to these groups through the sale of specially marked packages of fabric, thread, and other quilting related products by Island Batiks, The Quilt Pattern Magazine, Aurifil Threads, QuiltyBox, Benartex and Hancock’s of Paducah.
The Island Batik Ambassadors will be creating kennel quilts for the Small Kennel Quilt Team, a volunteer organization run by The Quilt Pattern Magazine. Kennel quilts must be 12” x 18” finished. For the safety of the pets, there are specific guidelines for creating kennel quilts. Be sure to read the whole page because there is a lot of information. I hope you will join us in this effort to comfort our special ones in time of need.
Here's my little Lucy, dozing on a quilt. Every pet should feel as cozy and as loved as this!
The current shelter in need is:
Bark and Roll Rescue Companions
3105 Shadows Lake Drive
Baton Rouge, LA 70816
Send your kennel quilts directly to the current shelter listed on the website. According to the website, it costs $6.80 to send 8 kennel quilts via USPS in a flat padded Priority Mail envelope, so that’s the goal I’m hoping to hit by the end of the month. We adopted our sweet Lucy from a shelter so I’m pretty motivated.
Who can resist that face? <grin>
